  • Reading for ages 5-7

  • Creative writing for ages 8-10

  • Creative writing for ages 11-14

  • Public speaking for ages 12-15

We have 4 Speech & Drama / Public Speaking Courses designed our special guest teacher, Jill Coombs, MA, PGCE, BA (Hons).  Jill has spent her professional life working in communication, through education and theatre arts. A strong advocate of the creative approaches to learning, Jill has propagated educational drama throughout the UK and recently English through drama in Asia, particularly Malaysia, where she has lived for over 15 years. She is a practitioner, teacher trainer, curriculum designer and international presenter. Formerly at Lorna Whiston School in Taman Tun, she is now collaborating with us at English Matters to produce these exciting new courses.

  • Story, Language and Drama (for 5 & 6 yo)  Mon 26th – Fri 29th Nov 9.30am – 12.30pm

Colourful stories will be introduced daily. Communicative language and drama activities will engage children in listening, speaking, reading and writing. At the end of an enjoyable week children should feel more confident about expressing themselves. They will bring home a different reading book every day and a portfolio of work at the end of the week.

  • Dragons! Speech and Drama (for 7 - 9 yo)  Mon 26th – Fri 29th Nov 9.30am – 12.30pm

In this fun-filled programme students will be encouraged to express themselves creatively and critically. With a variety of dragon stories as a stimulus they will role-play, improvise and present; working together on chants, movement sequences, tableaux and short scripts. We aim to develop student’s confidence and oral language competency.

  • Secondary Public Speaking  (for 2 age groups: 10 – 13 yo, 14 - 18 yo)  Mon 2nd – Fri 6th Dec 9.30am – 12.30pm

Speaking-up can be daunting. In this course we provide the tools to overcome nerves, think on your feet and free the voice. With a variety of activities and age-appropriate materials we explore speaking English in a variety of contexts. In an inclusive learning environment we aim to build the confidence and understanding needed for positive oral communication.

We have 2 Creative Writing Coursesdesigned by our Principal, Nina Beaugeard (who has a particular passion for writing).  Our ever-popular writing courses allow the students the chance to explore their own creativity while focussing on, among other things :

  • Genre; throughout their academic and adult life, our students will have to adapt their writing to suit a variety of different occasions.  By choosing a topic that can generate a variety of writing tasks, we provide students with the chance to experiment with different writing styles

  • Vocabulary; students will be encouraged to expand their vocabulary, and push themselves to find better, more interesting words to truly express their thoughts and ideas

  • Sentence structure; no more dull, repetitive sentences that always follow the same pattern! We’ll look at how to rephrase what you want to say, to add emphasis and to keep the reader interested and entertained.

Most of all, though, Nina aims to show her students just how enjoyable writing can be!

There will be 2 writing courses, for different ages:

  • Create a World! Creative Writing (for 10 - 13 yo)  Mon 26th – Fri 29th Nov 9.30am – 12.30pm

  • The Writing Project (for 7 - 9 yo)  Mon 2nd – Fri 6th Dec 9.30am – 12.30pm
